The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) is Denmark’s national human rights institution (NHRI). In order to earn that title, an institute must live up to the UN Paris Principles, passed by the UN General Assembly in 1993. The job of an NHRI is to promote and protect human rights in its country. This means among many things that DIHR must monitor that human rights are being observed in Denmark. The specific mandate and the tasks that accompany the NHRI title are described in full on our mandate.
As one of the oldest and most respected human rights institutes in the world, DIHR also plays an important role internationally. We assist countries all over the world in strengthening their NHRI’s and DIHR is often seen as a role model when completely new NHRI’s are established.
